In Omaha Hi-Lo the pot is split between the best high hand and the best qualifying low, where a low needs five unpaired cards of eight or lower. If nobody qualifies, the high hand takes everything. That single rule changes the whole game: the most valuable hands are the ones that can win both halves, because scooping an entire pot is worth roughly twice as much as splitting it, and hands that can only ever win half are worth far less than their raw strength suggests.

Big O is five-card Omaha Hi-Lo, and adding the fifth card makes qualifying lows dramatically more common. That has a counter-intuitive consequence: because low hands appear so often, the value of a strong low falls — you are frequently splitting the low half with someone else, ending up with a quarter of the pot while having invested a third or a half of it. Getting quartered is the characteristic way money disappears in Big O, and it happens to players who think they have a good hand.

The strategic centre of both games is therefore not hand strength but scoop equity. A hand that plays for one half is a liability in a raised multiway pot, however pretty it looks.
